diving - dive baza
Blue Water Beach Resort has been likened to Australia's Great Barrier Reef, as divers are entranced by its 3.2m coral reefs. From the resort's 7m rubber duck, dive to a depth of 25m or explore an 8m shelf, and you'll understand why over 600 marine species have been recorded here. You'll also find yourself in the company of humpback whales, dolphins or moray eels, who often join divers on their underwater explorations.
fishing
Located on the very edge of the deep Mozambique Channel, Blue Water Beach Resort offers extraordinary fishing. Fish for marlin (black, blue and striped) and sailfish, as well as warm-water game fish like giant kingfish, wahoo, king mackerel, dorado and bonito.
relaxing
From your sun-lounger or the spectacular rim-flow pool, gaze across the water at a necklace of five islands: the archipelago of Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque and the smaller Banque and Santa Carolina. Or browse the beach for one of Mozambique's enormous (and rare) pansy shells.
nature
Approximately 164 birds have been identified and confirmed on the islands and their shores are a paradise for plovers, sandpipers and other wading birds. You can also look out for red-tailed squirrels, samango monkeys, suni and duiker, as well as leatherback, loggerhead, green and hawksbill turtles.
Dugongs can also be spotted. These enormous vegetarians are related to manatees and are similar in appearance and behaviour, although the dugong's tail is fluked like a whale's. This is why some believe that dugongs were the inspiration for the ancient sea-faring tales of mermaids.
Although these languid animals make an easy target for coastal hunters, and are sought-after for their meat, oil, skin, bones and teeth, dugongs are now legally protected throughout their range. The largest population of these rare animals in Mozambique seems to be in the Bazaruto Archipelago, where aerial census takes place annually.
excursions
A variety of excursions is available at Blue Water Beach Resort, including boat trips to Dead Man's Island, visits to a fascinating nearby archaeological site and town trips. Please note that boat trips for children remain at the skipper's discretion.
Vilanculos is a busy, bustling town with friendly people and a lively atmosphere. Fresh produce is readily available at the markets and there are shops selling very basic supplies, as well as a petrol station and a clinic. There are also numerous restaurants serving fresh seafood and Portuguese cuisine. Wander through the markets to collect souvenirs or simply enjoy the hustle and bustle of a small coastal town.
